How it works
Business days = weekdays (Monday to Friday) from the start date to the end date, counting both, minus holidays that fall on those weekdays. Calendar days between = end date − start date.
Worked examples
- 2 to 30 November 2026: 21 weekdays; skipping Veterans Day (11 Nov) and Thanksgiving (26 Nov) leaves 19 business days. 28 calendar days between.
- 21 December 2026 to 8 January 2027: 15 weekdays; skipping Christmas Day and New Year's Day leaves 13 business days.
- 1 to 31 July 2026: 23 weekdays; skipping Independence Day, observed on Friday 3 July, leaves 22 business days.
Common questions
Does it count the start and end dates?
Business days count both dates. 'Calendar days between' is the plain difference, so Monday to Friday of one week is 4 days between and 5 business days.
Which holidays are skipped?
The 11 US federal holidays on the observed dates published by OPM. Banks, state offices and private employers can close on other days.
Can I use it for a pay period or a notice period?
Yes, for counting days. Whether a notice or deadline uses business or calendar days depends on the rule or contract that sets it.
