How it works
Tips per hour = total tips ÷ total hours worked. Share = tips per hour × hours worked. Shares are rounded to the cent, and any leftover cents go to the people with the largest fractions, so the shares always add up to the total.
Worked examples
- $600 in tips, three people working 8, 6 and 6 hours = 20 hours. $30 per hour: $240, $180 and $180.
- $100 in tips, three people with 1 hour each: $33.333… each. Rounded shares are $33.34, $33.33 and $33.33 = $100.00.
- $250 in tips, 7:30 and 4:30 = 12 hours. $20.833… per hour: $156.25 and $93.75.
Common questions
Why do some shares differ by one cent?
Tips cannot be split into fractions of a cent. The leftover cents go to the largest fractions, so the shares add up to the exact total.
What if someone worked zero hours?
They get $0, and the other shares are worked out from the hours that were worked.
Can I split by points or by role instead?
This calculator splits by hours only. If your workplace uses points or fixed percentages, those come from your employer's tip policy.
