How age affects your payment

How it works

Statutory redundancy pay = total weeks for your age and full years of service × average weekly pay, limited to the weekly cap for your nation on the relevant date. Count at most 20 years, working backwards. Round the final payment to the nearest penny.

Worked examples

  1. GB, 1 June 2026: age 45, 10 full years and £600 weekly pay gives 7.5 + 5 = 12.5 weeks, or £7,500.00.
  2. GB, 1 June 2026: age 30, 5 full years and £900 weekly pay gives 5 weeks capped at £751, or £3,755.00.
  3. Northern Ireland, 1 June 2026: age 60, 25 full years and £1,000 weekly pay counts 20 years at 1.5 weeks each, capped at £783: £23,490.00.

Common questions

How is statutory redundancy pay calculated?

Count backwards through up to 20 full years of service. Each year at age 41 or over counts as 1.5 weeks, each year at 22 to 40 as 1 week, and each earlier year as half a week. Multiply the total weeks by your capped average weekly pay.

What is the maximum statutory redundancy pay?

From 6 April 2026, the maximum is £22,530 in Great Britain and £23,490 in Northern Ireland. These use 20 years at 1.5 weeks per year, with weekly pay capped at £751 and £783 respectively.

Is redundancy pay taxed?

Statutory redundancy pay under £30,000 is not taxable.

What if I worked less than 2 years?

Statutory redundancy pay requires at least 2 full years of continuous service. Your employer’s contract may offer more than the statutory minimum.

What counts as weekly pay?

Use your average gross weekly pay over the 12 weeks before your redundancy notice. The calculator applies the weekly pay cap in force for your nation on the relevant date.

What is the relevant date?

The relevant date is usually the last day of your notice period. Use your age and full years of service on that date; it also determines which weekly pay cap applies.
