How it works

Weekly SSP is the lower of 80% of average weekly earnings (rounded to the penny) and the flat weekly rate. Divide by qualifying days and round the daily rate to the penny, then multiply by sick qualifying days. A full week receives the weekly rate exactly.

Worked examples

  1. £185 average weekly earnings, 5 qualifying days and 3 sick days: weekly £123.25, daily £24.65, SSP £73.95.
  2. £185 average weekly earnings, 6 qualifying days and 4 sick days: weekly £123.25, daily £20.54, SSP £82.16.
  3. £145 average weekly earnings gives £116 weekly. With 4 qualifying days and 2 sick days: daily £29, SSP £58. With 5 qualifying days and 3 sick days: daily £23.20, SSP £69.60.

Common questions

Do waiting days still apply?

No. Waiting days no longer apply from 6 April 2026; SSP is paid from the first full day of sickness for eligible employees.

Is there an earnings threshold?

From 6 April 2026 there is no earnings threshold for eligible employees. The weekly rate is limited to 80% of average weekly earnings or the flat rate, whichever is lower.

How long can SSP be paid?

Up to 28 weeks. This calculator estimates one week; it does not track earlier sickness or remaining entitlement.

Can my employer pay more?

Yes. An employer can pay more through a sick pay scheme but cannot pay less than the SSP you are entitled to.

Does this check eligibility or calculate my average earnings?

No. Enter your average weekly earnings calculated under GOV.UK guidance and check eligibility with your employer. Absences starting before 6 April 2026 need the separate transition guidance.
