How it works
For each shift, hours = end − start; if the end is earlier than the start, the shift crossed midnight and 24 hours are added. Day hours = all shifts − unpaid breaks. Decimal hours = minutes ÷ 60. Overtime = week hours above your threshold, counted week by week. Gross pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × overtime multiplier.
Worked examples
- Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute unpaid lunch: 8 h 30 min − 30 min = 8:00 a day, 40:00 (40.00 h) a week. At $18 an hour that is $720.00.
- A split shift of 07:00–11:00 and 15:00–19:30 is 4:00 + 4:30 = 8:30, or 8.50 decimal hours.
- Two weeks of 50 and 30 hours at $20 an hour: week 1 has 10 overtime hours, week 2 has none. Pay = 70 × $20 + 10 × $30 = $1,700, not the $1,600 you would get by averaging 80 hours over two weeks, which US federal law does not allow.
Common questions
How do I calculate hours worked with a lunch break?
Work out the time from clock-in to clock-out, then subtract the unpaid break. 08:00 to 16:30 with a 30-minute unpaid lunch is 8 h 30 min − 30 min = 8 hours.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes = 0.25 h, 30 minutes = 0.5 h, 45 minutes = 0.75 h, and 20 minutes ≈ 0.33 h. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours.
How do I count a shift that goes past midnight?
Enter the real start and end times, for example 22:00 and 06:00. When the end is earlier than the start, the calculator counts the time through midnight: 8 hours in this case.
Is overtime calculated per day or per week?
Under US federal law (the FLSA), overtime is due for hours over 40 in a workweek, at no less than 1.5 times the regular rate, and weeks cannot be averaged. Some states and other countries have different rules; set the threshold and rate that apply to you.
Is my time card saved?
Only if you press “Save as my usual week”. It is stored in this browser on this device and never sent to us.
