For employer health coverage rules, the IRS counts an employee as full-time when they average at least 30 hours of service a week, or 130 hours a month. Status is decided month by month; this check uses your weekly average only.

How it works

FTE = hours per week ÷ full-time hours per week. Hours per year = hours per week × weeks worked. Average hours per month = hours per year ÷ 12.

Worked examples

  1. 25 hours a week, 40-hour full-time week, 52 weeks: 25 ÷ 40 = 0.63 FTE; 1,300 hours a year; 108.33 hours a month on average.

  3. 20 hours a week, 37.5-hour full-time week, 48 weeks: 20 ÷ 37.5 = 0.53 FTE; 960 hours a year.
