How it works
PTO earned = hours worked ÷ hours needed per PTO hour, rounded down to the minute. New balance = old balance + earned, but not above the cap. Days = balance ÷ hours in one day. Value = balance × hourly rate.
Worked examples
- 1 hour per 30 worked, 80 hours worked: 80 ÷ 30 = 2.67 hours, shown as 2:40.
- Balance 47 hours, cap 48, 2:40 earned: the new balance stops at 48:00.
- 24 hours of PTO at $18.50 an hour = $444.00, or 3 days of 8 hours.
Common questions
What does '1 hour for every 30 hours worked' mean?
For each 30 hours you work, you earn 1 hour of paid time off. Working 15 hours earns half an hour. Your policy may count only regular hours, or include overtime.
What is a PTO cap?
The most PTO your balance can reach. Once you are at the cap you stop earning more until you use some. Caps and carry-over rules come from your policy and state or local law.
Is unused PTO paid out when I leave?
It depends on your state and your employer's written policy. Some states require payout of earned vacation; many do not. Check with your state labor office.
